The Walking Machine

My son Nate has an uncanny ability to find things that fit my interest!  From flutes to coffee roasting he seems to strike notes that resonate in my brain!  (No, other kids, I am not saying that you don't resonate too!)   We have chosen as a family to not buy birthday presents and we exchange names for Christmas presents, but sometimes we do give gifts, make things or promise dates.  This year Nate did it again...

A few years ago we shared some web sites, pics and YouTube clips about amazing beach wind walkers called Strandbeests invented in 1990 by Theo Jansen  of the Netherlands.

He makes most of his "beests" from PVC pipe, so that is right up my ally.  Nate gave me a small, injection molded kit to make one of the incredible works of "engineering art".

Here is the kit and the parts laid out.



With all the pile, it seems quite daunting, but really there are just 12 legs made from 4 parts each and hooked to a frame with ties.  Here are the 12 leg assemblies.



Once the legs are made, the frames are hooked to the crank shafts and then the legs are hooked on.



Once the 6 legs are added  to each half of the "beest" the halfs are joined.





I got a little confused about finishing a leg set.  I thought they were hanging the first legs on both crank sides and left off 2 of the tie rods!  After I got the whole thing done it was sort of floppy... I figured it out, what with all the extra ties duh, and I was able to slip the missing rods in without taking anything apart.  I also was having trouble with the slip together joints falling apart... that was much better once the movement was more limited by having all the ties installed.

I also had some trouble with binding at some points as it walked.  The instructions advised the builder to verify the order of the ties on the cranks, so I checked them and sure enough there were 2 where I had the order wrong.  Once I fixed that I could easily blow on the fan and watch the "beest" walk across the table!



I had hoped to build this with my 4 yo, but once I got it open it seemed clear that it was not a good project for him.  However... I am pretty sure there will be PVC models scaled up from these plans!  The little guy was installing bolts and nuts with me at 2, so I think he will handle that easily!

Update 3/6/2015...  With almost forgotten CAD skills, being new to Google SketchUp and never having done an articulated model animation... I guess this did not turn out too bad!  Now I can play with different configurations without needing to cut 120 pipes!  (this shows one set of legs)

To Yurt, or not to Yurt...

Most summers my son, his father-in-law, and I go up fishing for a long weekend to Meadow Creek in Colorado just outside Rocky Mountain National Park at 10,000 feet.  It is incredibly beautiful and we are often blessed by visits from moose and a family of osprey.

Part of the beauty is the pine forest that surrounds the lake.  Some years we can not make a fire due to forest fire danger, but most years we can and have ample fuel from fallen trees and branches.  The last few years the pine beetle infestation has taken a terrible toll on the area.  The rangers showed us how to spot the beetle entry points and predicted when some of our favorite trees would be down.

They must cut them in a controlled way near the camping areas because of the danger of them falling.  Unfortunately, we love to put a high tarp from those trees to create a not-so-little haven in a clearing.  We get a nice shady place to sit and protection from the typical afternoon shower.  Now, none of us is going to be comfortable putting stress on those trees... if they are still there...

So... I proposed a yurt... well sort of a yurt...  I was originally thinking of a full geodesic dome, but really thought it would be cool to go with minimal parts... how few could I go?  A central tall pole and 4 corner poles???  Nah... My first design was 18 poles.  It would have had a hex about 8 ft up and about 20 ft across.  Imagine 6, slightly less than 10 ft pipes laid out in a hexagon with  6 10.ft  pipes connected to each vertex and making a point in the middle a couple of feet above the hex for strength.  From every other pair of vertexes of the hex you attach 2, 10 ft poles and connect them together at the ground.  With only 3 "hard" ground contacts, the terrain could be ... anything!  Then 6 ropes would tie the structure to the ground between the pole pairs.  I figured we might need some bracing for the 10 ft poles and decided to make a 10" wooden model to try it out.  It worked very well and easily held up my "snow load" of a big couch pillow.  Of course, we worry more about wind than snow in August... but you never know in Colorado!

Well... that was over a year and a half ago.  We missed the trip last summer so I did not try out the full sized yurt.  Then, recently I was dreaming and for some reason I thought of the yurt.  In the dream it did not have the hex ring of pipes but rather a steel clothesline cable... yep... only tension!  Certainly the roof load would tension the hex but I needed to adjust the model to be sure.  I think it worked very well!  So, now it only has 12 poles, the "hex" of steel cable and 3, 30 ft lengths of rope to create the 6 tie downs.  6 stout stakes finish the structure.  It needs a rope to a weight on the ground in the center until the side ropes are in place.   When I re-configured the wooden model, the POC structure held up the "snow load" just as well as the 18 pole structure and had lots of side force strength too.  I will not know if mid-pole bracing is needed until I do the full size yurt, but if it is, 9, 5 ft PVC pipe sections should do it.

The roof covering will be a 24x24 ft tarp ($42) tied to the ground stakes, with some folds to fit.  Then, a series of 10x24 (3x $22) ft tarps will be ground-staked and hung around the 60 ft hex to close the yurt for the night.  We always have everything that can attract animals in the car at night anyway, so I suppose we do not need to be too secure with those walls!

Tesla Frisbee!

Did ya know that a Frisbee is a Tesla Turbine???

Some years ago I made a flying saucer... well a tiny one from used foam plates!  All I did was cut 3 holes near the center of one plate that left 3 beam structures strong enough to keep the center of the plate rigid.  Then I trimmed another plate to remove the outer curved section.  I glued toothpick sections as standoffs to hold the two plates about 1/8" apart.  I put a little tape in the center to reinforce it and glued a longer toothpick section through center holes so that the shaft stuck out a little ways on the bottom.  I glued a little scrap plastic cylinder that had a nub on one side onto the toothpick on the underside.  Voi la!  Flying saucer!

I took another plastic scrap tube a little bigger than the one on the saucer and cut a channel on one side big enough for the saucer cylinder nub.  The second cylinder was glued to a small electric motor shaft to be the saucer impeller.  when the saucer hub was placed on the motor shaft the nub in the slot imparted rotation to the saucer but let it fly up when it had sufficient lift.

I put the motor on a variable power supply and fired it up!  The first thing I noticed was that just a Tesla said, there was no need to finely machine or balance the rotor... it self-centered as soon as a sufficient spin rate was reached.  As I turned up the juice the little saucer gained rotational speed, nicely lifted off and floated across the room!  It had a very stable flight but had a penchant for ending up behind heavy funiture!!!  HaZah!

"What does this have to do with Frisbees???" I hear you thinking!  Well I always noticed how Frisbees fly better when they are spun fast, but I just thought it was because they were gyscopically more stable and thus moved through the air better.  Well, that might be some of it, but I think there is more!

A Tesla Turbine uses no blades but rather spinning disks with holes near the center.  Air or any other fluid can go through the inner holes and move along the surface.  The fluid adhears to the surface of the disk and viscosity couples the surface fluid to the near fluid.  If the turbine is driven, the fluid flows outward, sucking more fluid in through the central holes and out the edges.  Conversely, if pressurized fluid is ducted to the edge it will spiral (which ever way you start it) toward the center holes to exit and will spin the disk, imparting torque to the central shaft.

The flying saucer plates form  a very light, efficient Tesla Turbine by sucking in air from above which creates lift and by shooting the air out from the upper disk's under surface and the lower disk's upper surface, which hits the downward curve of the upper plate, producing more lift.  The under side of the lower disk also shoots some more air out to hit the upper plate lip which might create some more lift but also creates a low pressure zone under that disk that probably cancels that lift... oh well...

However, that is not the case with the upper surface of the upper disk!  It also throws air out and contributes to the low pressure near the center above the saucer for more lift.

Ah, but back then I forgot about the Coanda effect!  Thomas Young (1800) and Henri Coanda (1910) described this effect which causes fluids to follow a curved surface... it is adhesion and viscosiy again - see?  So, not only does the upper air fly outward, it is bent downward by the upper surface of the downward curving upper plate.  (Go ahead.. read that sentence 3 more times... ... ... got it?).

So my recent Frisbee epiphany is that both the under and upper surfaces of the Frisbee are functioning like a Tesla Turbine to create actual lift!  The under surface throws air out which is directed down by the downward curve at the Frisbee edge.  Also the upper surface throws air out which is deflected down by the downward curving upper surface via the Coanda effect!

I am obese - but getting better! The Skinny

It sounds like I mean that I am sick and getting better - eh? You are right! I just found that out! And how to get better! Woo Hoo!

The nature and cure of obesity was published in 1954 -- Other "experts" must make a lot of money selling other diet and exercise stuff for them to have kept this a "secret" for so long! However, that is changing and I want this post to be part of that! I am not affiliated to any solution providers and I do not make any money from this post, so... trust me... been there, done that, doing it, succeeding. Nothing succeeds like success. You can do it too!!! I am not a doctor or any kind of medical professional, so go to the sources and check it out for yourself and with your doctor.

I think this will take 3 posts -- The Skinny, The Disorder, The Cure... Here's The Skinny:

25 years ago I read a book called "Dieting Makes You Fat" (Geoffrey Cannon, Simon & Schuster, August 1985) Written by a doctor, it has most of the stuff that you read in all the popular diet books and is not far from right. However, it missed one simple thing that caused it to not work for me... dieting is a disorder and has nothing to do with how much you weigh, what you eat, how much you exercise... none of that! I have been socially and mentally beat up, mocked, whined at, cried for, and ridiculed all of my life because I have been a pudge! I never remember a time in my life when my weight was not an issue, even in my 20s when I was fairly trim. I always felt fat and worried about eating too much! What I did not know was that obesity was already in me and I was just manifesting its effects. How different my life would have been if I knew then what I just learned now at 62... ugh... life...

One of the reasons we do not learn things is that we are skeptical of the source, and rightly so! However, I am presenting you with the info straight out and with no gain to be had, so just keep an open mind and LEARN! You will be amazed! Here are the details in short which I learned by studying about the HCG diet which was discovered by Dr. ATW Simeons. Read the next posts and other resources for more info. These posts represent my own understanding of the methods and my own experience with dieting and the new "HCG Way" and they do not represent the HCG diet providers.

Obesity - The Disorder
1. Obesity is a disorder but it is not a disease.
.....a. You can be very trim and have the obesity disorder.
.....b. If you have obesity you can exert will power, diet, exercise, etc and still GAIN WEIGHT.
.....c. Curing the disorder is not done by loosing weight!
2. Obese weight is a separate issue from the disorder.
.....a. Unless you cure the disorder, you will have it even if you loose weight, which you will surely gain back!
.....b. Once cured you may not loose the weight and you will NOT be able to loose the fat by usual means.
.....c. Obese Fat can not be accessed no mater how much you exert will power, diet, exercise and etc.
.....d. There are a few exceptions to 2.c... which leads to hope for a cure.

Obesity - The Cure
1. The Obesity disorder has a cultural cause and cure
.....a. Obesity is caused by overwhelming the part of the brain that controls fat storage.
.....b. To protect your body the brain must find relief, so it switches on a long term fat storage "savings account".
.....c. Like financial savings accounts, fat savings accounts easily accept deposits but resist withdrawals... otherwise you would not save!
.....d. No matter how trim you are, if you have the obesity disorder you need to reset it or you will manifest the disorder and you will gain weight.
.....e. To cure the disorder you must free the brain from overload long enough that it resets the savings account switch.
2. Obese weight also has a cure
.....a. The disorder cure is totally separate from the weight cure.
.....b. Once fat is stored in the savings account it can not be accessed by usual means.
.....c. Fat in the storage account can not be accessed no mater how much you exert will power, diet exercise and etc.
.....d. There are a few exceptions to 2.c... which leads to the cure!

Biggest Moon in 19 years!!!

Hello... Do we have any sense any more? Do we think?

Now, OK... the moon is the closest and appears the biggest it has in 18 years... no problem with that. So, what's my beef?

What was it last month? Hummm... The 18 year cycle is how long it takes for a full moon to appear at perigee...the closest point in the orbit. Oh, wait, you mean last orbit it was that close too, but it just was not at full moon then? Yep. Ah, then maybe the light from the bright full moon could cause an earthquake... ya think?

I wonder how much less big and bright it was last month? Well... according to Wikipedia the Lunar orbit around the Earth causes it to display the same phase about every 29.5 days while the actual orbit takes 27.3 days. So, that is about 1.08 times around or close to an extra 1/14 of an orbit (.07) Now, imagine the elliptical orbit, put the Earth a little bit off center toward the perigee and think about that beautiful ellipse divide it into pie pieces... Go ahead... half to the apogee - the maximum distance - half again (2 slices from max to min), half again (4), half again (8), half again (16) is close. "Half it" 4 times. Now tell me this, if you compare the distance the moon is from the earth now and than the next full moon... how much difference would there be? Hardly any!

The news casters exclaim it is "30% brighter than usual"... now wait a minute... do they mean 30% brighter than average? Well, OK, that might be... but 30% brighter than next month is what EVERYONE infers, or seems to. 9 years from now will they do this again and find the month when the noon happens to be full at apogee and say "It is the darkest full moon in 18 years!" Well, sure, it will be, but there will be a hardly precipitable change from what it was the month before that and the month after.

Are we all so gullible that we take what the news-heads say and just react without thinking it through ourselves??? Do we run out with binoculars to see the great event... I fear that we are and do. It just takes too much energy to do the thinking ourselves. However, did you notice how similar all of the news casts and articles were? And even how similarly all the news casters presented the miracle? That causes me to infer that there was some common source and not even the news folks are thinking... they are just parroting some other source. Scary. I wonder who that source is, and what agenda there might be. Well, if there is no agenda now, could there be? Think about no one thinking for themselves. Not one newscaster saying... well 30% brighter than average, but hardly any brighter than last month or next month.

And even more insidious is the fact that what they are saying is true! Except for that little change from "average" to "normal". That seems like a perfectly OK change except that it totally changes the meaning in this case. Nois

I now want to turn to momentum, velocity and the speed of light.

A useful metaphore may not be perfect, but it should help one to visualize many properties of a system. Our slice-time worm metaphore has allowed us to perceive a 4D universe and how time can be expressed as a space dimension, which lead to visualizing time travel... not bad! There are many things about our existance that do not have very good explanations, so our attempts to visualize them do not really leave us any worse off then we were at the beginning! Like gravity, momentum is exactly such a phenomanon. We have been able to describe the properties of momentum for a long time, but what "causes" it? Why should something at rest tend to stay at rest and something in motion tend to stay in motion?

Lets see how our Worm motif can help us visualize momentum. Remember when we talked about fixed points in the future and how we can be predestined without limiting us in the present? Well, you will need to exercise that thought a bit now. We have practiced visualizing our rib-slice-worm (RSW) in time. And practiced thinking of the RSW already existing in the future and possibly being able to move in the past. Lets play with that image a bit. Visualize yourself running down a straight section of trail and then see your RSW extending through time over that frame. Your RSW is sort of tilted in the direction that you ran and is fairly straight. Imagine the RSW being flexible, but somewhat stiff. Once you bend it in the direction down the trail, you are actually bending it in the future. Once it is bent you do not need to apply more force to make it "move", so you can just let time pass and it will express itself as moving forward through time.

Of course, we can not actually expect our RSW to float down the trail without some effort, because we still need to hold ourself up by moving our legs under us, overcoming wind resistance, avoiding obsticals and etc. However, if I was running on ice and then suddenly stopped running, I would continue to move forward until the reduced friction of the ice finally slowed me down. I can visualize the bent worm as being the means of creating the tendancy to keep moving and I can visualize my interaction with all of the surrounding worms as being the means of slowing me down... as I bend my worm into the future I must displace a lot of other future worms and I have limited energy to do that. Eventually the interaction with the other worms will cause me to "slow down" because I will then stop pushing the other worms around.

The other worms are exibiting the other property of momentum... they want to stay at rest because if they move they must push a bunch of other worms around... see? Moving through them into the future forces them to be displaced, which takes energy. If I stop appying energy, as when I stopped running, I eventually slow until my motion matches the motion of all the other worms around me. The concept of actually being "at rest" is sort of silly when you think about it... am I not on the surface of the earth spinning around 24,000 miles a day (1,000 mph)? Am I not circling the earth's orbit every year? Am I not moving with the solar system around the center of the Milky Way Galixie? What is "still"? Basically, we think of ourselves being at rest when we are matching our motion to the motion of all the other worms near us - see? If we ever find ourself in open space, with relatively few other worms around us, then we would expect to bend our worm and then sit back and move along into the future with almost no further expendature of energy. Of course we would surely find ourselves caught in some cometary eliptical orbit destined to return right back to the starting place! Can you see that creating a huge spiral racing across slice-time? At this point in my musing, I tend to think about the future "narrow gate" I need to pass through as a destination that is narrow, but accessible from anywhere in my 3D brane rather than as being some actual 3D locatiion. I can only visualize that in 4D space.

Now suppose we keep putting in more and more energy so that we go faster and faster. What will that look like? To me, I see my high velocity worm bending flatter and flatter to my "now" time surface. That means that for each slice, the next slice has to be displaced farther as I stack them up. It makes sense to me that there would be some limit to how far I could displace the slices, and that it would take more and more energy to accomplish that displacement. (Stay tuned for the next post when we will follow a single atom through time.) When we were thinking about time travel we visualized bending our RSW into an S shape in time. At the top and bottom bends of the S the direction of movement is flat, so that might cause a contradiction to the limitation of velocity except that the actual length of level travel is vanishingly small. It is like the moment in Calculus where the slope is 0, but it is exactly 0 for 0 time, so it does not actually violate the law! I love Calculus!

We will turn to the meaning of mass in the next posts and why it might be that mass increases with velocity. For now, just think about accelerating a particle. As velocity increases, the particle's mass increases, it shrinks and it takes more and more energy to accelerate it. I have read that one way to visualize the limitation of the speed of light is to imagine it taking more and more energy to accomplish the acceleration until it takes all of the energy in the universe to accelerate the tiniest particle to the speed of light. Like a nuclear reaction converting mass into energy, I would need to convert all of the mass in the universe into energy to accelerate that one particle... which would own that energy as mass but have vanishingly small length! Wow! If you packed all of that mass-energy into a single point and then it exploded, that would be a really Big Bang... ya'think?

It is sort of like the old saying that we know more and more about less and less until finally we know absoutely everything about nothing, at which point we also know absoutely nothing about everything!

What? What now, Nois?

OK, OK, back to time travel in a minute... First we have to talk about snakes, and worms. They have various modes of locomotion, including Rectilinear and Serpentine. Actually, several of the other modes are just variations of these. Think of the last fishing worm, or night crawler you saw... not too bad a memory I hope... remember how they seemed to stretch their head out in front of them, then they latched on up front and started to move the center part of their body up by the head, then they brought the tail end up to the rest of the body... repeat. Snakes can also do that, and they also bend their bodies into S shapes and propagate that S along their bodies, which propells them forward in serpentine mode.

OK, so why, the biology lesson? Well, If our rib-slice-worms (RSWs) are going to travel in time, they need to have a mode of locomotion - right? I have thought quite a bit about these two modes and would like to explore each of them a bit. Much like the Worm metaphore for 4D existance, I am not proposing this as a practical method, but rather as a means to visualize a system where one can visualize something that is nearly impossible to visualize normally. Let's see if it helps us visualize time travel without accidentally killing grandma...

Lets talk about serpentine locomotion first. From the perspective of classic syfy, this is time travel via the RSW metaphore. If you think about "Back to the future" Michael's RSW would need to bend back on itself so that his worm could go back below the "now" surface. To get a grasp of this, think about our Flatland friend's worm. What would happen as we watched him if his slice-time worm bent enough that he made an S curve instead of just going straight up and if part of that S went below the surface of the water. Would you expect that to damage him in any way? Nope. Well, we would have to assume that he was flexible enough to stretch that far and that it does not rip him away from future "fixed points" that had to happen. Of course, we also need to allow him to move in the "past" as we discussed last post. In the current metaphore, we said that the "worm" was only self aware at the surface of the water. If, so, then we could end up in a situation at the current surface, where there would actually be 3 instances of a conscious self - up, down, up! However, with those rules, the time traveler would not be consious when he was back visiting grandma! Not exactly what I had in mind! The time traveling worm would not bother grandma a bit and would not cause any significant trouble in the past, because he already clearly exists in the present and future... eh? If the worm stays bent like that then eventually the "now" surface cones up to the top of the S, then that stream of consiousness would suddenly end and the second "up" going self-aware would sort of "take over" as the future instance. That would explain some really odd days where I can not remember doing something that I clearly did, or remember doing something that I can see that I did not do! How about you?

Maybe I am a snake in time! If a tenticle of a hydra bent down and then back up, would we expect that to damage him, the other tenticles, or significantly change the rest of the hydra higher up... nope.

Rectilinear motion is another interesting option! In this case, there is only one instance of consiousness... that is a good thing! However, there is an odd twist coused by the 'now" surface again. Lets suppose that the worm is able to stretch and squeeze himself like the worm. That would effectively take the "now.1" slice into the past or future and move some other "now.n" slice to the "now" surface. However, while the future slice was visiting the "now" surface, he would be self-aware. If he moved back to his normal surface and then eventually that became the self aware surface, he would remember being there in the past. Cool. Also, all oh his slices would experience passing through the "now" surface, so there would be an accelerated time passage for him during the move. Time would rewind very fast if he stretched the other way.

Another possiblity is that there is only one slice who is the designated driver, in that he is self-aware no matter where he goes along the time line. I find this possibility more appealing, and it fits with the syfy story lines better too! In this model, I am consious when I meet my grandma! I suppose I would have to be unconsious in the now... my wife would say she finds me drifting in another plane fairly often, so maybe that is it! I do not know what phenomanon makes me self-aware at the now surface, so I can not speculate what the rules might be for the traveling worm slices.

This experience seems similar to me as the "accedent awen" (1) I have experienced several times. Take for example a time when I witnessed a broad side collison. I was driving along a 55 mph road in North Denver in the inside lane when the light in front of me turned yellow. I made an instant decision and stopped. At exactly the moment I stepped on the break I heard the car that was behind me in the right lane accelerate to go on through the intersection. We all make those choices every time we drive... I thought they were pushing it, but hey, each person knows themselves and their car's abilities. I watched as the right lane car slowely approached the intersection. Across the intersection in the left turn lane was a car waiting to turn. When they saw me slowing to stop, they hit the gas and slowely began to turn. I was amazed to watch as the slowly turning car moved in front of the slowly crossing car to my right... why did they not both just stop! Oh well, I thought, they are going so slow, there will not be much damage... the crossing car hit the turning car on the right rear and that car spun around at least once, ending up going backwards back across the median on the other side of the intersection and into the the path of the oncoming traffic. Luckily, they were all slowing to stop at the red light and there was no additional damage. I breathed a sigh of relief as I saw the two drivers come out of both cars un-hurt... they were both mad at the other... but safe!

Wait a minute... play that back... that makes no sense. How could there have been such a forceful collision if they were moving so slow? Then I realized that I was awen... I call it being "accident awen" (1)-- that state of mind where time slows down and you experience everything in slow motion. (Some writers describe a battle awen where a warrior is able to fight better than 10 opponents because they see the opponents moving in slow motion while the opponents see them moving with lightening reflexes.) The police gathered my information as a witness, then went to handel the situation. When the policeman returned he explained that neither driver saw the other because my car blocked their vision... makes sense. He had one question for me... Did the car in the right lane enter the intersection before the light turned red... did it? Well, unfortunately, I reviewed the tape in my head several times and I never noticed the light change - duh!!! The police man sent me on my way... probably very frustrated.

So, my time travel question is, how did my brain know to go into the awen state so that I would watch the accident happen in slo-mo? Some researchers have said that our brains actually record all of those details all of the time and we arrange them to suite (Temporal Binding). So we are always assembling un-synchronized events into coherent sequences, so can easily perceive evereything in slo-mo. I don't know... not very appealing to me. I do not think I was remembering the slow-mo, I think I actually experienced it! Another school of thought (e.g. Kappa Effect) is that we can actually speed up or slow down our perception of time by how many incidents we perceive per second. So, if we want time to pass quickly, we can just become unaware of our surroundings and go into "limbo". I have a hard time doing that! About the only time I can stop my brain from whizzing around is to be fishing (and recently when barely running!)! Not sure Why! Also, if I want time to slow down, I just start to notice as many detials as possible. The mind perceives that time is passing slowly because it assumes a certain habitual rate of instance notices per second - see? This leaves me cold too because I still want to know how I knew to start watching, or perceiving those details? Others say that the adrenalin rush we have in danger slows down our perception of time.

Now, with our current RSW time travel metaphore, this is fairly easy to explain... Either I have some part of me that is a little bit aware of the future (remember when my Flatland friend agreed that he must have a little wafer thickness in time?) or I am able to slip back just a bit in time so that I can relive that snipet in slo-mo. I have thought about this a lot, and I really can not think up a better explanation... I can travel in time! And I do it on a fairly regular, but mostly unconsequential way. Suppose I was able to "change the past"... wouldn't I have told myself to look at that light?

Then again, it is possible that hearing that driver rev his engine right when I stepped on my break is what caused my mind to start recording in high-def and my perception to be in slo-mo. That would fit the second school of thought about the speed of time passing, and eliminate my time travel explanation... but, if so, wouldn't I be awen a lot?.. Like everytime something triggers my spider sense? Oh well... no easy answer here...

1. I am not referring here to the Awen of Welsh poetic inspiration, but related to it. You know how it feels to be "in awe" - right? That sort of breath stopping emotion that can comes from various sources... fear, grandness, majesty, power... accidents. Well, if you fall you are fallen - right, or If someone takes you, you are taken - eh? So if you are in awe, you are awen - see? In the Arthurian novels of Stephen A. Lawhead, he uses the term as I have - a state of mind. He talks often of the battle awen.
